Healthy Lifestyle or Obsessive Habit?

When it comes to health and fitness and the fact that I am 36, I have been through a lot of phases; some physical, some mental, some emotional, some good, and some not so good. I have seen diet fads come and go, I have gone from using workout tapes to downloading workouts online, from aerobics to weight lifting. As the fads come and go, one thing I have noticed that doesn’t seem to change, is the pressure in the fitness world to look a certain way. The pressure I put on myself to look a certain way. A way of life that was a constant teeter totter between healthy and obsessive.  I was miserable and I needed a new mindset, a healthy mindset…

The science behind exercise has come a long way.  A lot has been learned about resistance training, its benefits, how important cardio is, the proper ways to gain flexibility and gain speed so on and so forth. Now days with the right knowledge it is easier than ever to try to try to manipulate your body to get a certain look.

I have learned over the years though that NO matter how much you try, if you don’t appreciate your body no matter how much you manipulate it, you won’t be happy with it. You can get caught up thinking someone else’s “perfect body” and striving to look like them. But that is dangerous since we cannot manipulate the body outside of its natural structure and makeup. Sure, you can build your biceps and more muscles, you can slim and shape your body, but to some extent your body is what it is in the terms of how your body is built: your body height, bone structure, etc.  Your body is built differently than mine, and mine is built differently than the next person’s body. The way our bodies function is very similar, but your chemical makeup may be slightly different than mine. No two bodies are alike, so I think its dangerous to look at someone else is body and wish and work hard to try to manipulate your body to look like someone there’s.  Instead of trying to manipulate our bodies by focusing on our weight (which fluctuates no matter what you do!) or by the size of your clothes…. when we exercise our focus should be to appreciate our bodies and all its capabilities. We must change our mindset from manipulation to appreciation.

One of the most important factors for someone to reach any goal is their why. Why are you striving for this goal? If you are striving to lose weight, why? If you want to build muscle why? If you want to be healthier, why?

If your why or your answer is superficial, when the going gets tough you won’t keep going. When your why is something you can’t truly obtain, ie “a perfect body” You will feel defeated no matter how much work you do. I am speaking form experience. In the natural when you look in the mirror you will not look photoshopped…no matter how much I hope to. It can be a letdown and be a distraction on the path of true health and happiness.  So, when your goal is to just look a certain way, you may find it’s not that easy and you are truly never satisfied.
The Lord has helped me gain healing in this area. With a renewed mind I have learned that my why must be deeper than my looks. I needed a reason that was bigger than me.

When your why is something deep then when you want to give up it will motivate you to keep going. It is time to get past the superficial and not think just about how you look, instead start thinking about how you would feel if you were healthier? What would that do for your daily tasks of life? How would you being healthier be better for your family? How could having self-confidence help you fulfill your dream?  Think about the benefits of good health, better breathing, better sleep, hormone balance, less inflammation, muscle alignments, less body aches and pains the list goes on and on.
It is easy to get caught up in working out to look a certain way, but it is dangerous. With an obsessive attitude maintaining my weight was my hobby for many many years. I was neither truly happy nor was I truly healthy, even though I looked like I was.  I was not treating my body like a temple, rather like a garbage can.

With the healing of the Lord I have learned to appreciate my body. I am learning more and more every day how to implement better health choices without strain. I want to be able to make changes I can maintain naturally and organically. So, for me I have found that by thinking about how amazing my body is and all that it can do. By digging deeper and getting educated about how my body works and functions, how eating certain foods has certain effects on me, that has been the most motivating factor in being able to truly want to apply and maintain change. By appreciating my body, my lungs, my heart, my skeleton and neurological systems, and my gut health it has changed my perspective on my body. I see it as a gift from God, a temple of the Holy Spirit, an amazing asset to me. I see it as an incredible tool that I have access to and that is my job to maintain. I think of each system as a system that needs and wants to be trained so that my body can operate as one smooth system.

I realize now that exercise and diet negatively defined me for a good portion of my life. If I didn’t work out, I wasn’t happy, it tortured me. If I weighed too much on the scale, I didn’t need to drink water that day.  If I ate too much, I had to work out twice as hard. I lived and breathed by my obsessive habit.  And I was miserable.

I have stopped trying to manipulate my body. And I stopped being obsessive. I don’t use a scale or take body measurements often. I don’t think about what size I am. One truth is I have broad shoulders and I am more comfortable in large shirts. There used to be a time I would squeeze into a M or S even just because of the size it was. Now I am real with myself and I feel comfortable in my clothing no matter the size. Since my clothes fit better, they are more flattering.

I have learned to love my body the way that it is, no matter what phase of life it is in.  I now work on being stronger, faster, the capability to take in more oxygen, the ability to do 10 pushups on my toes, run 1 mile comfortably, not punish myself when I over indulge or don’t workout for 3 days…because it does happen.  I want to have a healthy mindset and a healthy lifestyle that allows for balance in all areas. I want to live with intention but when life gets in the way I don’t want to lose my joy or think I have messed up somehow. Instead when life happens, I don’t beat myself up, I encourage myself. I pick up where I left off, and just keep moving forward!

Changing my mindset from manipulation to appreciation has been freeing. While I am still a work in progress, I know I am not where I was and I am on a path now, where I want to be going.  I am truly happy, and my setbacks don’t derail me like they once did. And to me that is what true health and happiness is all about! Living a healthy lifestyle that I can easily and simply maintain while creating confidence and living my best life naturally and organically!!

Getting Derailed and Getting Back on Track

What do you do when life gets in the way? It is like for a while you were getting your workouts in consistently, drinking enough water, eating well
....then before you knew it, you were off track. And now you are off of your workout schedule, not drinking enough water again, somehow life showed up and got in the way. Does this mean you give up and quit working on your health and fitness goals all together??

NOOOOO WAY!!!!!!!

The first thing you don't want to do when you get derailed from reaching your goals is quit. Quitting is for sure not going to help you get back on track, so never ever quit! It is OK to fall down, fail and make mistakes, but it is never OK to quit!

So don't beat yourself up! The second thing I would say to NOT do after getting derailed, is beat yourself up. Don't allow your mind to trick you into thinking things like you are bad person, you can't be healthy, you will never loose enough weight, these goals are impossible etc... these are lies! You are more than able to reach any goal! Be your own best friend and encourage yourself as you would
anyone else. Be compassionate and gracious with yourself!

Also don't punish yourself with workouts or by starving yourself or binge eating. You can't undo what has already be done, so don't focus on the past.  Don't worry about what you can't change, concentrate on what you can change! Having a healthy mindset is not about rewards and punishments, but instead about a way of life that tries to intentionally live as healthy as possible, understanding our bodies and minds are a gift to be taken care, a privilege to do so and doing our best to do so, while also being realistic about the fact that life is full of ups and downs and being  able to be mentally OK when things go differently than planned.

So what should you do if you get derailed? Admit your are derailed, dust the dirt off your shoulders,  shake the sand off of your feet and keep moving forward! All you can really do is pick up where you left off. SO start where you are!! And if you are not sure where you are? Take a moment o reflect.

Take this time to re-focus on your goals, on your why you are striving for these goals, what is working and what is not. I am not sure who said this, but I love this quote, "Be strict with your goals, but flexible with your approach." Sometimes you just need to re-evaluate goals and strategy and make a new plan of action. You don't have to change your destination, you just may need to change the route you are taking

Either way you go, whether you start a new plan of action or pick up where you left off you will find yourself back on track and getting closer and closer towards reaching those goals! We all face bumps in the roads, get side tracked and loose focus at times. You are not alone! But you are different. You stand out among the crowd as someone who will not be defeated, as someone who will not give up. You are a fighter and you are OK when you get knocked down because you know you will always get back up!!!

It's All in the Timing

One of the biggest obstacles we all face is the obstacle of time. I know that as a home school mom of 3 there never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done. Usually that means, as moms, we put off taking care of ourselves. But as moms, I can not stress it enough, we must take care
of ourselves. We must show our children that we are worthy of taking care of ourselves. We should show them that investing in our physical health is an investment with the best return - good health.Plus without our own strength and good health how can we help others?

One way I have overcome this obstacle is I have shortened my workouts when necessary to 10-20 minute workouts. I have a saying I live by , "A little bit every day goes a long way!" Especially when it comes to starting or getting back into a fitness routine, you don't need to workout for hours, you really need to create the habit of working out on a regular basis.

If you are just beginning, starting with 10 minutes a day is doable! We all have 10 minutes to walk, run, workout, swim or just get out and move. The best way to make healthy living a lifestyle is to make it enjoyable, one way to make it enjoyable is to set goals you know you will accomplish! Who doesn't enjoy the feeling of accomplishment?!! Its the accomplishment of that goal that will fuel your fire to set and overcome the next goal.

Another way I have overcome the obstacle of time when it comes to finding time for my fitness is: I use a fitness timer. It is that simple! A fitness or interval timer can help you 1. by controlling the amount time you have to workout and 2. it will help you get the most out of any length of time. For example if I only have ten minutes to get in a good workout, I set the time for 40-50 second intervals of work/ 20-10 seconds of rest to equal one minute, repeat that pattern ten times and poof! In 10 minutes you got in a great workout! You can repeat the set to make a super effective 20 minute workout!

There are many ways you can set your timer! Such as a Tabata interval which is 20 seconds of work 10 seconds of rest on repeat for 8 rounds which equals 4 mins! You could get 3 tabatas in only 12-15 minutes!

You can download Free Tabata Timers on your phone or purchase a timer like this one I have

Running is about your lungs not your legs!

I used to be an avid runner. 🏃 So when three kids and life happened it didn't take long for running to become a chore. Running became hard for me as I was not in the shape I used to be in and I couldn't stop comparing my new momself of 3 to my oldself of 25.
As I was recently studying to get re-certified as a personal trainer the topic of VO2 (Oxygen consumption) came up and I realized how important it really is and how much I needed to improve mine.
There are 3 main components of fitness: strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. As I am not getting any younger I found myself very intrigued in a new way and decided I really wanted to focus on my VO2Max which is The best rate at which you consume and utilize oxygen during exercise.
Starting in January I decided to use running as a way to increase my oxygen. I used the 12 Min Cooper Run Test to see where I was. My first score was 56 and that was not very good. Especially for someone who was working out consistently. This eye opening moment showed me that while I was working on my strength and even flexibility, I wasn't in the best cardio health I could be.  So while I was strong at that point I was not in great cardio health and that was not ok!
I decided my first goal would be to get to the point where I could run 1 mile well. My only goal each time I ran was to go a little further and a little faster than the last time. This allowed me to grow at the rate of my body and not at the rate of the pressure I was putting on myself in the previous months when I was trying to keep up with the old me. Before I knew it, I had increased from running 1 mile to 1.5 and so on. This shift of focus mentally allowed me to see running for a different purpose and that has helped me enjoy it! I took the pressure off of having to run a certain distance or speed by a certain time. Slowing down the process is what I needed. I didn't need my own mental pressures I needed to renew my mindset.
Now today I ran 3 miles and it felt good. It felt like a challenge I could overcome! It hasn't been a quick process, it has taken me about 3 1/2 months but its been productive! Running has become enjoyable again and while I am running I am not struggling to breathe...which makes me realize running is more about your lungs than about your legs!

5 Tips For Working Out With Children

As a mom of 3 I know how hard it can be to find time for yourself. I understand that it can be distracting and difficult to start and let alone finish a workout! While there are many distractions and even sometimes safety hazards LOL while working out around children, the good outweighs the bad. I am here to encourage you, motivate and inspire you that if I can do it, you can too can do it!

Tip 1: Don't take yourself to seriously

Tip 2: Always practice safety first!

Tip 3: If interrupted just keep moving and pick up where you left off; enjoy the longer rest break! :)

Tip 4: If is is safe let them join in on the fun :)

Tip 5: Remember you are leading by example and when they see you take care of yourself they will want to take care of themselves too!
