What do you do when life gets in the way? It is like for a while you were getting your workouts in consistently, drinking enough water, eating well....then before you knew it, you were off track. And now you are off of your workout schedule, not drinking enough water again, somehow life showed up and got in the way. Does this mean you give up and quit working on your health and fitness goals all together??
NOOOOO WAY!!!!!!!
The first thing you don't want to do when you get derailed from reaching your goals is quit. Quitting is for sure not going to help you get back on track, so never ever quit! It is OK to fall down, fail and make mistakes, but it is never OK to quit!
So don't beat yourself up! The second thing I would say to NOT do after getting derailed, is beat yourself up. Don't allow your mind to trick you into thinking things like you are bad person, you can't be healthy, you will never loose enough weight, these goals are impossible etc... these are lies! You are more than able to reach any goal! Be your own best friend and encourage yourself as you would anyone else. Be compassionate and gracious with yourself!
Also don't punish yourself with workouts or by starving yourself or binge eating. You can't undo what has already be done, so don't focus on the past. Don't worry about what you can't change, concentrate on what you can change! Having a healthy mindset is not about rewards and punishments, but instead about a way of life that tries to intentionally live as healthy as possible, understanding our bodies and minds are a gift to be taken care, a privilege to do so and doing our best to do so, while also being realistic about the fact that life is full of ups and downs and being able to be mentally OK when things go differently than planned.
So what should you do if you get derailed? Admit your are derailed, dust the dirt off your shoulders, shake the sand off of your feet and keep moving forward! All you can really do is pick up where you left off. SO start where you are!! And if you are not sure where you are? Take a moment o reflect.
Take this time to re-focus on your goals, on your why you are striving for these goals, what is working and what is not. I am not sure who said this, but I love this quote, "Be strict with your goals, but flexible with your approach." Sometimes you just need to re-evaluate goals and strategy and make a new plan of action. You don't have to change your destination, you just may need to change the route you are taking
Either way you go, whether you start a new plan of action or pick up where you left off you will find yourself back on track and getting closer and closer towards reaching those goals! We all face bumps in the roads, get side tracked and loose focus at times. You are not alone! But you are different. You stand out among the crowd as someone who will not be defeated, as someone who will not give up. You are a fighter and you are OK when you get knocked down because you know you will always get back up!!!
